Get Resistance: Fall of Man - Playstation 3

Description

In Resistance: Fall of Man, US and British forces band together in a last-ditch effort to save England from a horric scourge -- the Chimera. This parasitic species infects other life forms with a virus that rapidly mutates victims into new Chimera. In mere decades this race has ripped apart populations across Asia and Europe and by 1951 has landed on the shores of England. You play the part of US a Army Ranger, fighting alongside a group of British resistance soldiers to free the country from the Chimera and to halt their spread across the globe.

PLAYSTATION 3's killer app has arrived.

Wield human or Chimeran weapons. .

Chimera come in a variety of terrifying shapes and sizes. .

The environments are incredibly detailed and lifelike. .

Enemies will flank you if you're careless about picking them off. . The Chimera wars
War is everywhere and everything in Resistance. An alien race began toying with the planet just after Word War I and in mere decades, the Chimera ╨ a species of unknown origin propagating a virus that converts other life forms into more Chimera ╨ has overrun Russia and all of Europe. Humanity╒s hope for survival is slim, and the tide of the battle rests on the shoulders of U.S. Army Ranger, Sgt. Nathan Hale. The Chimera didn't plan to take this protracted war lying down, however, and amassed their forces in Russia. Once Russia was captured, they quickly erected a wall around the former country, rebuking all efforts at communication or contact. While the world waited and wondered what other terrors might spill from the wall, England prepares for and falls to a major Chimera invasion in 1951. The United States comes to aid their English allies, but all does not go as planned. The next three days will see some of the most intense fighting the war has known thus far, and it's up to you to end the Chimera threat before the plague of defeat can encircle the globe. Next-generation gameplay and style
The gameplay of Resistance is classic First Person Shooter. Insomniac Games has combined its passion for creating exotic weapons and vehicles with a proprietary physics system to create unique human and alien weaponry. Many of the weapons of the game are era-appropriate, such as pistols and grenades. Other weapons, such as the Chimeran Auger, are of alien design. Due to the differences in the ways that the various weapons handle, great care must be taken when entering an area infested with Chimera with their own weaponry. In addition to the obvious array of weapons, players can use melee attacks and jump to avoid attack. Special game actions, called "Skill Tasks," are worth set number of points that can be spent to unlock new content in the game. A Skill Task may be something as simple as killing a number of enemies in a short period of time or as involved as locating a hidden area in the single player campaign. The mystery of the tasks, however, is that they aren't actually revealed until you have completed the task. This makes for a great reply incentive, as you will be mowing down Chimera and be suddenly rewarded with task points, often when you least expect the reward. Obviously, presentation is one of the areas in which Resistance shines. The frame rate is silky-smooth, and never seems to get bogged down when there is a large number of Chimera or teammates on screen. Animations are believable, the locations are detailed, and the voice acting is top-notch. Explosions are especially impressive, sending shrapnel and smoke in all directions. If you're looking for a game to impress your friends with graphically, look no further. Resistance is the type of game that makes you feel confident about the future of the PLAYSTATION 3. Track stats and more online
Resistance also boasts an impressive 40 player online multiplayer mode. It's not uncommon to find large-scale battles with both intricate strategy and simple "run and gun" play styles. Created and managed jointly by Insomniac Games and Sony Computer Entertainment, MyResistance.net is the official online community destination for Resistance: Fall of Man. At MyResistance.net, players can view their multiplayer stats in near-real time, participate in forums with other fans, download unlockable content and more.

5 out of 5 stars Only One Can Resist
Sky

No one can resist the urge to keep playing Resistance: Fall of Man once the game is started. Chapter after chapter of exhilarating battles against a plethora of creatures that you use a plethora of weapons to defeat (and they'll use them against you too).To really put the plot of the game in context (if you care about the plot), it's well worth the visit to the official Resistance: Fall of Man web site; there's a ton of story there that I'd bet 90% of the people who start the game are unaware of. For me, the story helped me "get into character" for the game. If you just want to start wasting some nasty beasts, "Get to it, soldier!" Rest assured, the story won't help you beat the enemies or evade the barrage of defenses that will be fired at you by them.As a relatively new gamer, I'm glad that I played Call of Duty 3 Call of Duty 3 before I cracked open Resistance: Fall of Man. It was good FPS training (set in approximately the same time period) for this much more difficult PS3 title.Resistance has an M (mature gamers only) rating which miffs me a bit, but then I'm a bit more liberal when it comes to what I think might warp the little minds of kids these days. I've seen this classified as a Horror title, but I think that Sci-fi Action is much more fitting. Resistance deserved a T (teen) rating. My kids and I get hung up all too often on sunny days playing Resistance's Co-op Mode when we should be outside playing ball. And hopefully that alone speaks volumes as to how addictively fun this game is.Co-op Mode is split screen of course because the game is FPS; it would be nice if some games could give the option of switching to a single screen, third person view for Co-op in order to negate the need for split screen, but that would distinctly change to look, range, feel and some of the weaponry...so I assume that's why it's never offered on Co-op mode.Multi-player is very cool. Multi-player is not like Co-op where you play the Campaign Mode with a partner. In Multi-player you battle against your friends offline (4 player max/split screen) or online (40 player max/full screen). You get some areas of battle to play in that you encountered in Campaign Mode and some new map scematics. But Resistance's real challenge is in single player Campaign Mode.Your weapons are plentiful. You start with a pretty standard machine gun (M5A2) that includes a grenade launcher that will become your best "little friend" in the game. It's very useful on the enemies that you encounter most throughout the game. You also get several mean weapons that you pick up from your fallen comrades and defeated beasts including the enemy's main machine gun (The Bullseye...very handy), grenades, a shotgun, a sniper rifle, a radiation blaster (The Auger), a mine thrower, a rapid fire subsonic bolt dispenser (The Hailstorm) and a rocket launcher.Grenades are key to survival...use them, but you'll want to keep in mind that you can run out real real fast...so use them pretty much exclusively to take down groups of enemies.(And five other weapons aside from the ones that I mentioned above are unlocked only after beating/completing the game once on medium difficulty or higher.)If you missed the countless gamer magazines' synopsises of the creature types and the power of the individual weapons, there are some great gamer help web sites that are worth taking a look at to help you strategize (just click on my profile above and email me if you'd like me to point you in the right direction). And speaking of getting pointed in the right direction, part of the fun of this game is figuring out on your own how to get from chapter to chapter. There are no maps, which at times was frustrating. Let me tell you that if the phrase "the best route is not always the most obvious" ever applied to trying to get from here to there it applies in this game on more than one occasion. You'll also need to at times navigate a jeep and a tank.So what exactly are you fighting? Where exactly did they come from? If you're up to the challenge to find out....You're Sgt. Nathan Hale, and you're the only one with a Resistance to the Fall of Man. Prepare for some serious battle. 5 out of 5 stars Great Shooter Title for the PS3
Lisa Shea

Resistance - Fall of Man is a first person shooter that combines World War II era environments with Doom-like horrific enemies to fight. It also offers great online multiplayer gameplay. The plot is that, around the time of World War II, enemies attacked the world, starting with Russia and moving westward through Europe and England. In the 50s, the US launched a counter-attack, landing in England. You're fighting, at least to start with, with WWII era weapons and outfits through the streets of England.Let's start with the graphics. The game goes for a very Call of Duty style of look - not quite realistic, more "cartooney" or stylized. Textures are smoothed out, some objects are simplified. That's not to say this is a Disney kiddie look. The monsters are grimey and nasty looking, the war-torn streets are very gritty. If anything, because this is set in a WWII type atmosphere, much of the game is brown, grimy and shell-shocked.The HUD is reasonably well done and not intrusive. A small series of bars on the left indicates your health. An equally small but useful display on the right tracks your ammo, magazines and grenades. The sound leans towards epic thundering scores, a la Gladiator or Conan. Players who love heavy rock music might not enjoy this, but I actually love this kind of music. I own both of the soundtracks I mentioned :). So to me, this really draws you into the atmosphere. The yells, gun noises and so on seem relatively realistic to help you feel you're really in the middle of a fight. I also like that, during gameplay, it's usually done without music. If I'm trying to sneak somewhere and listen for enemy movement, I don't want that objective made difficult by a soundtrack.Gameplay itself is typical FPS fare. You can crouch, jump over things, zoom in on your enemy, throw grenades, strafe, and so on. Your friends and enemies are rather good about taking cover and not just rushing an enemy head-on. There are a few situations which seem quite scripted - if your pals are meant to die, you could play perfectly and take out every enemy quickly and your friends will still be killed by mysterious off-screen snipers. Still, the game needs to keep you on course for the plot so this is to be expected.Checkpointing is reasonably good, although sometimes it sends you further back then you might like to start again. Healing is done via canisters you find, but depending on your skill you might wish there were more canisters scattered around :). That's why they have 3 levels of difficulty here. The interactivity with your environment is pretty impressive. Say your enemy is hiding behind a car. You can shoot out the car's windows and then shoot the enemy through the open space. Or you can shoot the car to damage it, and have it explode a la the infamous 'red exploding barrels' found in most shooting games. If you shoot at a window a few times, it will first crack, then pieces will fall out.Not only is the game great in single player mode, but you can play co-op with a friend at your home, or online in larger groups with friends or strangers from around the world. This helps turn the game from a play-for-a-few-months-at-home style game to a play-eternally-with-friends-online game.Well recommended! Read more ›

4 out of 5 stars My hands-on experience...
Michael A. Conforti

I don't know how any one can get the real picture on this game with reviews from the fanboys and haters being so predominant. I hope my review is helpful to you. This is the best first-person-shooter for a SONY platform. The gameplay is fun and solid. Controls are responsive and, as stated by another reviewer, hit detection is accurate. It's a must own launch title for the PS3.The graphics are in a bit "flat". They don't have that multi-dimension feel that I expected from a next-gen title on such a powerful system. There's no depth to inanimate objects such as grass, boxes, chairs and so forth. Also, you can just run right through dead characters. You don't have the ability to push the bodies around. Also, when walking through grass you literally walk "through" it. It doesn't move you just pass through it. The environments also aren't very interactive. There's not much more you can do besides run, hide and shoot. The smoothness of the gameplay is impressive. Even when there are loads of characters on screen everything still runs smoothly. This is a testament to the PS3's power. That being said, it also means that this game doesn't really stress the hardware. Resistance delivers and goods and does everything well.We have to remember that the PS3 is still in its infancy and has a way to go before the software catches up to the hardware. We'll have to wait for the next round of high end games to find out just what the PS3 is capable of.

5 out of 5 stars Gears of What???
Amazon Customer

I am really, really picky about my FPS's. Over the years, only Halo, Halo 2, Half Life 2, Socom 2, and Counterstrike have been able to make me say "wow" and keep playing for months. My games have to have it all (story, gameplay, online, sound). This is another one to add to that list. Resistance is all around incredible. I would say this is one of my favorite games ever (and thats saying a ton for a launch title). The single player comes second only to Half Life 2 and the multiplayer is on par and may be even a little better than the rest of the titles I mentioned. I have been playing relentlessly since launch and plan to play for months to come. Throw in the coop op mode and all the unlockables and leveling up in the online game and you have an instant classic.Probably the biggest stand out in the game are the weapons. This game has a weapon that shoots through walls for goodness sake. The sniper rifle slows down time. Even the rocket launcher can be stopped in midair, fire its own volley of rockets, and then be aimed again and launched in another direction. Its just amazing how much thought and innovation went into these weapons. The sound is great, the story in engaging, and the graphics are very good. They aren't Gears of War good, but then again, Resistance puts more than 4 creatures on the screen at ones and keeps a steady framerate. And last but not least, the online play (20 vs 20) is LAG FREE. I have yet to see one instance of lag in my entire time playing the online game, and everyone else seems to have the same results. All in all, this game is amazing, and the fact that it is a launch title makes it all the more impressive. BUY THIS NOW. If your waiting to buy your ps3, BUY IT THEN.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent game
Michael Clarkson

After much waiting, wailing, and gnashing of teeth from its owners, the GameCube finally got its own RPG. And what an RPG it got!GAMEPLAY: SUPERBThis game is absurdly fun to play. Control in both the overworld, dungeons, and battle is effortless, with the controller utilized to good effect in almost every instance. Item use and character development are easy to control. However, if you want, you can get very particular about your character's growth thanks to the 'title' system. The Strike/Technical divide, which is poorly explained by the manual and the game, also allows for a more general way of controlling your character's growth. The application of EX gems and their associated skills allows still finer control of your character's abilities. But again, you can play the game very well and have a lot of fun without getting too deeply into any of this. The real-time battle system will be a bit confusing to those used to the more standard turn-based gameplay of other console RPGs. The learning curve is pretty shallow, however, and the inability to directly control the other members of your party is not as much a handicap as you might think. The AI is reasonably intelligent (though the characters sometimes position themselves oddly or run around for no apparent reason), and if necessary the player can command them to use particular skills using either controller shortcuts or the battle menu. The learning curve for controlling a given character, as I said, is very shallow... you can learn to control Lloyd, Kratos, Zelos, and Sheena in only one or two battles. Regal, Presea, and Collette require a bit more work (or at least they did for me), and Genis and Raine will be hardest (mainly because they're useless as melee fighters, and everyone else is either primarily melee or at least useful for it). Carefully assigning your battle skills to your controller and preparing unison attacks will allow you to create combos and special attacks that look awesome, but it's just as fun to assign a few stock skills and wail away on your opponents.Again, battle strategy is as deep as you want it to be. The game sets defaults which are reasonably useful, but if you desire it, you can adjust strategies to fit your own approach to battle. Also, you have the ability to adjust individual strategies in battle through the menu, or switch the whole group to an alternate strategy through D-pad shortcuts. As with other aspects of the game, battle strategy is scalable to your level of interest and expertise.I have not tried multiplayer, but I have seen complaints that the tendency of the camera to zoom in on Player 1 in battle detracts from the experience. Multiplayer for this sort of game is an iffy prospect anyway, and the AI is sufficiently competent that you don't NEED your pals to pick up controllers, so I don't view this as a weakness. The gameplay unites RPG strategy with good old-fashioned button-mashing fun, and that makes for a great experience, IMHO.STORY: SUPERBWith the caveat 'for a game', as always. Despite some cheesy lines (and I mean REALLY cheesy), the story of the game is nicely plotted, and most of the characters behave believably. The twists in the story are both interesting and plausible, and the game makes effective use of foreshadowing without being ridiculously heavy-handed about it. The only problem is that you have to devote some time to the game before the plot picks up; the first part of the game makes it seem like it's going to be the standard 'beat the dungeons and save the world' story that's been standard on consoles since the first Legend of Zelda game.GRAPHICS: EXCELLENTCel-shading. Some love it on general principle, some hate it on general principle. If you belong to either category, I can't help you. However, if you like a game that just looks good, then you won't go wrong with this one. The overworld graphics are rather bland (and the black-blob monsters in the overworld are atrocious), but everything else is very nice. The choice to use blurring as a method of introducing perspective was a mistake, but this is the only complaint I can level against the cutscenes and town areas. The character designs are pretty standard (slender build + narrow chin + absurd hair) for anime, except for Regal. Monster designs, however, are generally good, and the appearance of the special moves in battle is good overall and fantastic in a few cases. As long as you're not a cel-hater, this game will be lots of fun to look at.AUDIO: EXCELLENTMost of the voice acting is good (the post-battle exclamations particularly so). However, the guy playing Kratos sounds like he has a head cold, which makes his delivery fairly weak. The music is passable; not really inspiring (until the end credits, which inexplicably have much better music than most of the game), but not distracting. A few places have really catchy tunes associated with them, however (Katz Village), and generally the music is at least nice to listen to. The main weakness, however, is the z-skits, which should have had voiceover (and apparently did in the Japanese version). A few lines here and there are over-emoted, but generally voiceover quality is high.REPLAYABILITY: EXCELLENTAn abundance of side-quests and mini-games (although these tend to be of little interest to me), the Grade system, and the ability to reshape the story in several places makes this game a lot of fun to play multiple times. Winning it once might take 60-80 hours, but in all likelihood you'll want to win it at least twice, and maybe more times than that.OVERALL: SUPERB (92%)Hours of excellent gameplay and an engaging story are paired with eye-pleasing graphics and surprisingly good voice acting. If you have a Gamecube, this is an excellent choice. Hopefully Namco will be releasing future 'Tales' series games over here as well. Read more ›

4 out of 5 stars Final Fantasy? Who needs that now that we have this on GC!
F. Khan

I have edited this review after finishing the game. (...)A long time ago, the tree of mana whithered away because of a ferocious war that raged across the lands. A hero gave his life to save the tree. This so grieved the goddess of mana that she left for the heavens asking her angels to awaken her for if she slept the world would whither away like the tree. Thus the angels job became to guide the "chosen one" to the heavens so that she/he may awaken the goddess and regenerate the world. Now A young girl named Colette the Chosen One, has recieved her calling and she must journey to regenerate the world. Her Best friends Lloyd (the main Character of the game), and Genis decided to go with her to protect her.The plot starts off feeling eerily similar to Secret of Mana. Not only that it seems like a cheesier version of that to begin with. But as you delve deeper into Lloyd & Colette's journey it starts to come into its own. This game has depth. It deals with issues of politics, religion, discrimination, & friendship. There are many twists and turns all supported by a brilliant & complex cast of characters. Further every so often you have the option of following conversations between your characters as they journey which help add more depth to their characters. Now on to the graphics & sound. The visuals are gorgeous. The Colors are bright, and the locations are lush. The animation is smooth, and after some major events you are treated to a hand drawn anime cut scene. The sound is pretty good too. Characters taunt and chatter as they battle. You can also hear them recite incantations as they cast spells. The music is nice but I felt the game lacked that one memorable piece that every single final fantasy (FF) game seems to have. My major complaint with the sound is the voice acting is pretty cheesy. It has its strong moments but for most parts I think it could have been done a lot better. The Battle System is awsome. You can see enemies on the overworld map, or in dungeons. They will chase after you but you can avoid them 85% of the time. Once you do fight, it's a lot of fun. You can move around the field, choose a target and execute attacks. Its almost like SOM except cooler. You can jump to avoid attacks, or block if you wish. Further you have techs (magic attacks & skills) that you can execute, and you can unleash combined attacks on enemies using your party for super damage. And lets not forget combos! You can string together techs to hit the enemies a huge number of times. My highest is 72 hit combo but if you link your party's attacks properly you could go higher. Your party members do a pretty good job of fighting along with you, and even using techs (spells) to heal you etc. You can customize their behaviour using a myriad of options to set AI priorities for each of your team members.Ok some negative things now. I think one thing that this game really lacks is that its missing that one great event, like the opera house in ff6, or the ballroom dance in ff8 that really made those game memorable (atleast for me). I wish there was that one great scene that I could go back to my GC, reload the game and watch over and over again. Regardless the game is still amazing and memorable as a whole if not for one event. I would highly recommend this game. It is a lot of fun. (...) Stop reading and start buying! Read more ›

5 out of 5 stars Finally a good RPG for the Cube
Meggie

A salesman recommended this game to me. I've been waiting forever for a good RPG for the Cube, he said it was a great game. Boy was he right.Storyline:5/5OK, so at first the storyline seems really clichéd and predictable. Just wait. The plot has so many twists and turns; I found myself shocked more than once, jeez, you sure don't expect half of the things that happen.Graphics:4.5/5Everything is so smooth. So, the characters aren't breathtaking during the cutscenes (their movements seem strange sometimes), but the landscapes are nice and so are the battle scenes. The few anime cutscenes during the game are simply BEAUTIFUL.Music:5/5I personally adore the music in this game. I found myself pausing the game just to listen to it many times, and saving as many of the midis for the game as possible. ^__^Sound Effects:4.5/5The sound effects are usually just as amazing as everything else. I just sometimes found the voice acting strange (but VERY rarely)Characters:5/5O__O I LOVED the characters (especially Kratos, so what if he's a bit clichéd). Such variety, such cool costumes ^__^Replay Value:5/5Once you've finished the game, a harder mode becomes unlocked and you can use your GRADE (sort of like experience points, but not) to start a new game with certain extras.Overall (not average)5/5This is a definite must buy for the Cube. The game had me completely enravelled, it was definetly one of the best games I have ever played (and I've played a lot). I almost garantee that you'll like it ^__^

5 out of 5 stars Cooking, cooking!

This is a very cute game for the DS. A good one if you've just purchased a DS and want a game that really shows you what a stylus can do. ;) Some recipes are kinda easy, while others proove more challenging. I'm still working on peeling potatoes fast enough. The graphics are very amuzing. I laughed out loud as I spilled water all over the place while trying to drain some pasta. The meals are japanese based...and make you want to go out and make your own gyoza! This is very fun for an adult who likes DS mini games, and it doesn't seem too 'kiddish' as I had feared. I'm so glad this unique japanese game made it to the states. Two thumbs up for Cooking Mama!

I won't say that Cooking Mama is the best game I've played in recent months. Surely, there's something more important than cooking - like, killing zombies on the X360, for example. However, it's certainly the most innovative, especially when you consider how much you can do on the limited dimensions of a Nintendo DS touch screen. In Cooking Mama, you're an apprentice in the fine art of cuisine management. Your master, a certain Mama, will put you through a series of saliva-inducing recipes, and will grill you through the preparation of each as if it's the only thing you live for. You can choose to practise before hand, but when you go into the actual process of making a particular food, you'll find that there's no room for error. A wrong move, and Mama will not hesitate to show you her wrath.Making a food involves several steps. Some are short, while some may take forever. For example, when preparing a pan-fried fish, you'll have to go through the coating of the fish slices, the melting of the butter, the actual pan-frying and the arranging of the plate. Each process in turn involves different ways of doing things. Coating the fish slices, for example, requires you to drag your stylus in a left-right manner while touching the fish. Melting the butter requires you to rapidly drag the butter in a circular motion when it's on a hot plate. Pan-frying involves a "following the command on-screen" mini-game that requires you to perform whatever Mama tells you to, and so on.The impressive thing here is that, even though you're just stroking your stylus throughout the game's 70+ recipes, you're essentially doing different things. It's a bit like Trauma Centre from last year, but instead of seeing body parts, you're looking at food. If you're more adventurous, you can even combine recipes to form new ones, which adds depth to the gameplay. For a game as quirky as this, it's understandable that it uses quirky graphics. The presentation of Cooking Mama is light-hearted, and makes the hectic process of cooking (to me, at least) much more enjoyable. The music is a little weak, even though it does have some nice variety. But seriously, graphics and audios are not what you'd buy this game for. I mean, who cares about these things when you've Fried Octopus Balls to make? For its sheer audacity in bringing the kitchen onto the DS, I'd recommend Cooking Mama to every owner of the DS. Don't expect to see your DS in a few weeks, however, if you bought this game, and have a missus in the house. Now, if only my wife can learn a few tips out of this. Read more ›

5 out of 5 stars A Surprise Family Favorite!
Rhianna Walker

Having recently purchased a DS lite for my seven year old we let him choose his games. Being like most boys he picked a Mario title and a Sonic title. I jokingly commented to my husband I wanted to try Cooking Mama. The game is mine! Or so I thought when he brought it home for me a few days later.I started playing right away and was quite amused by the cute little graphics, annoyingly catchy music and Mama's firey eyes when I messed up on my Fried Octopus Balls. The mini-game style and chances to practice each technique before making them kept me entertained to the point of taking the DS with me so I could play at random places outside my home. Until of course I laid it down one night (my thumbs were sore from hours of perfecting my Miso Soup) and my husband picked it up. Hearing him curse at the cheery little Mama and his over-cooked chicken was more amusing than watching him throwing his console controllers. Next my son got his hands on the game, it is HIS DS afterall. Soon it was his favorite, Mario and Sonic long forgotten.I never thought this game would become a family favorite. I expected it to wind up lost somewhere in the stacks of other games. Instead everyone in our family takes turns preparing all these odd Japanese dishes and earning new ones. While very repetative and at times frustrating we've all really enjoyed it. If you're looking for a family friendly game for all ages I would reccomend this game a thousand times over.

5 out of 5 stars Fun new innovative cooking game
Cameron Usman

I got this for my girl along with one of the new pink DS Lite and she is loving both the machine and the game. I think anybody that enjoys cooking will probably enjoy this game.It is basically simple stylus controlled fun little minigames (200+) through which you make 76 real world food items. It has a great progression so it is easy to learn even if you don't know cooking or don't know how to play games. For example first you learn to make boiled rice which is as simple as adding the right about of water to the pot with a simple minigame... and then if you do that successfully then next you can try making fried rice.I really like the low price of the game. It should appeal to anybody that enjoys Warioware, Feel the Magic, etc type games.

5 out of 5 stars Love to cook but hate messes try this fun game!

This is a fun game. You can cook many different recipes and unlock many more as well. There are probably a lot of recipes you have never heard of. If you aren't allowed to cook you can play this game without getting hurt or burned.

4 out of 5 stars Very fun, no matter your age
Jason Parker

I work at a Japanese restaurant and not only are the recipes in this game very accurate, it's tremendously fun for all of us. Whether it's 30 year old me, my 40 year old boss, or their 10 and 6 year old kids, all of us enjoy it. It's easy enough for the 6 year to do most of it, but hard enough that even I haven't gotten 100s on every single recipe yet. I'd recommend this game whole heartedly.

The game contains 120 brand-new levels, which like its predecessor are filled with either puzzle-solving or action-oriented challenges which are solved/survived by players who utilize their vocabularies to conjure up usable objects that appear as they are typed out on the DS' lower screen. Super Scribblenauts, recognizes the tens of thousands of words/objects that the original game could, as well as hundreds more on top of that. In addition, it now also recognizes adjectives, which makes for a myriad number of word combinations that translate to many, many, many more possible combinations of all shapes, sizes, color and condition related solutions usable in-game. Additional features include: a new hint system that allows hints to be purchased in-game, a new optional D-pad driven control system for Maxwell, an improved level editor, and more. 4 out of 5 stars Thoughts from a first-time scribbler
Sergeant Farron

(Pros/Cons at the end)I never played the first Scribblenauts. I recall the buzz it made at E3 2009 with its write-anything, create-anything gameplay, but I just never got around to buying it.That's a good thing, though, because Super Scribblenauts is the perfect entry into the series for first-time scribblers. With revamped controls, improved physics, and the addition of adjectives, Super Scribblenauts is probably what the first game should have been all along. The game puts you in the shoes of Maxwell, who must solve puzzles and overcome obstacles with the help of--well, virtually anything you can think of. The crux of Scribblenauts is the notepad, where you can write anything that comes to mind--be it a ladder, a tiger, a gun, a panda, and so on--and see it (usually) come to life in the game world. This, as you can imagine, opens up a wealth of creative possibilities. One early puzzle in the game tasks you with making a lion go to sleep. A possible solution is to write in "moon," which summons a moon and turns the sky dark, allowing the lion to sleep. Another solution is to summon a tranquilizer gun and shoot the lion with it. You can even write in "sleepy meat" and feed it to the lion, who will become sleepy in turn. This is where adjectives come into play. From what I've heard about the first game, you could only summon objects, which in itself is a powerful idea. But here, you can give life to the craziest corners of your imagination: a vampiric, purple, striped, floating, friendly panda is not out of the question. Whether that panda will give you any use toward any of the game's 120 levels is another issue, but it's something you can play with endlessly in the game's "sandbox" title screen. The story levels themselves range from genuinely brainteasing to somewhat uninspired. The aforementioned "sleepy lion" level is an early standout, while another level in which you have to summon specific types of food is merely so-so. The game shines when it encourages you to discover strange solutions, but it falls when the answers are limited to obvious outcomes. That's why the title screen sandbox is such a gamesaver. When you're itching to stretch your creative muscles, or to test the game's dictionary, you're free to summon all sorts of things and see how they play out in the game's world. You can create, erase, and create all over again to your heart's content. Put Santa Claus on a friendly winged velociraptor, if you wish.Scribblenauts is flexible in that its levels are all bite-sized affairs, easy for those playing on the go, and yet there's enough of a pull from the core creative gameplay that you can sit for hours and still not get bored. Even so, those 120 levels will go by quickly, so Scribblenauts certainly isn't an epic game. But it's thankfully extended by the option to replay most levels in "advanced" mode, where you have to complete a level three times in a row by using different objects each time. You can re-use the same objects from the very first time you played the level, so really you're coming up with two new solutions, not three, but that probably makes it easier on the brain in some instances. I just wish I could turn off the hint pop-ups in advanced mode--I don't need to be told to do the same objective three times in a row.Overall, Scribblenauts is a great, fun--and funny!--game. I'm giving it four stars because it stands as an extremely solid title, but a few issues (like only being able to share custom levels with friends) prevent it from the legendary greatness of a five-star game. Even so, this is one of the coolest games for the DS, and it's suitable for all ages. It's even a great title for parents to bond with their children by solving puzzles together and giving suggestions to the youngsters on what to summon. Highly recommended.Pros:+ This is a great first point of entry into the series. Since there's no real plot, you can start this game without needing to have played the first Scribblenauts.+ The achievement-like Merit system is an addictive way to encourage you to try certain things in the game, and Merits can be earned even in the title screen sandbox.+ Buying costumes for Maxwell is a lot of fun. You can play as a girl, if you want to, even though you're still technically Maxwell in disguise.+ The game offers purchasable hints if you're really stumped in a level, and these hints will even unlock on their own if you wait long enough.+ Adjectives. I can't imagine playing Scribblenauts without them!+ Two different control schemes: stylus only, or the d-pad/buttons. Both schemes are lefty-friendly.+ The custom level creator is fun and very easy to use.+ Most levels aren't timed, giving you room to think.+ 3 save slots, so multiple people can enjoy this game without stepping on each other's toes.+ The in-game dictionary is impressive. You can summon a surprising range of things, and they'll be relatively accurate. (I was very surprised to find I could create a Teratorn.)+ This game will make you actually reach for a dictionary just to see what kinds of fun things you can summon. A great way to expand vocabulary and sharpen spelling!+ In-game spelling suggestions can lead you to new, strange objects.Cons:- Custom levels can only be shared with friends. I can only imagine how long the life of this game could be extended if the developers let people share levels with the world.- Some of the story levels are uninspired.- Not every object behaves as it should, or as you'd expect it to. Some objects are copies of others, or are otherwise useless.Recommended for:* Creative children (probably ages 6 and up, because you need to know basic spelling and language to effectively play the game).* Creative adults (who will totally feel their inner child awaken as they play this game).* People who want some novelty in their games.* People who haven't played the first Scribblenauts and want another great title for their DS.Things to note:* This game, Super Scribblenauts, is the second game in the series. Scribblenauts is the first game. Their boxes and titles are very similar, so pay close attention if you're purchasing this as a gift for someone. Read more ›

5 out of 5 stars What to expect from Super Scribblenauts
malingenie

I bought the original last year and the superior sequel this year. I am a >30 year old male and love this series. As a kid playing videogames I always wondered why I couldn't kick open locked doors or use a rope in my inventory to rappel down a cliff. I was always limited to what the developers wrought. Nothing against them, I love a good scripted game. When, in the first game I used a helicopter with a carrot to coax a cow to move out of a traffic jam; a sound that I hadn't heard in a looong time ushered from my lips. I was giggling. This game recreates that moment and more. Having an undead haunted chair scare a purple spotted baby made me giggle, as much as having a pregnant zombie monkey ravage a bouncy, angry zoo.Now I KNOW its not for everyone, and I do have a hard time explaining my fascination to other adults, but this is the best lego box I've played with in 2 decades. What can you expect from Super Scribblenauts? You can expect to see a grown man giggle at a gentlemanly giant spider. Monocles and all.

5 out of 5 stars Everything the original Scribblenauts should have been
Captain Packrat

For those who don't remember, Scribblenauts was supposed to be one of the greatest video games ever made. It had a library of tens of thousands of objects you could summon and combine in virtually infinite ways. Alas, the game suffered from quirky physics and horrendous controls. You could spend an enormous amount of time creating an elaborate solution to a puzzle, only to have the main character misinterpret a screen tap and throw himself off a cliff or casually blow himself up.I am extremely pleased to report that 5th Cell seems to have learned from their mistakes and have fixed all those issues with their sequel, Super Scribblenauts. The game physics have been greatly improved. In the original, connected objects tended to flail around. If you attached a chain to a stick, your character would thrash about like he was insane. Placing a magnet on top of a car would cause the car to fly off the screen and disappear. These flaws have been fixed in Super Scribblenauts. Gravity behaves more normally and things no longer float around when attached to each other.Even more important, the controls have been fixed. You now have the option of using the stylus or the D-pad. If you decide to use the touch screen to move, you'll find that Maxwell isn't jumpy like in the original game. He keeps his feet on the ground unless he needs to jump and he doesn't run off if you accidentally tap the wrong place on the screen. You also can no longer accidentally drop objects; tapping on yourself brings up a menu instead. You can now take objects away from NPCs, something you couldn't easily do in the original. The camera also stays wherever you put it, instead of returning to Maxwell automatically. The new version of the game adds adjectives to its already enormous dictionary. So now instead of merely summoning a "car", you can be specific and summon a "blue car", a "small car" or a "wooden car". You can use multiple adjectives, so you can even summon a "small blue wooden car". On one puzzle, I tried summoning a "romantic dinner" and ended up with a steak with heart thought balloons. The hint system has also been improved. Hints cost money, but the amount required decreases the longer you keep trying at the level. Eventually the game will provide the hints for free if you try long enough. In the original game, there wasn't much incentive to be creative with the objects you summon; I ended up using "wings" on almost every single level that required flying or climbing. Super Scribblenauts on the other hand rewards originality. Each new word you use gets you money, so it pays to break out the thesaurus.Super Scribblenauts is everything Scribblenauts should have been. It's a shame the designers didn't get it right the first time, but at least they learned from their mistakes and got the sequel right. Read more ›

5 out of 5 stars top 10 game for my kids
Siddova

My kids age 9 and 13 have XBOX 360, Wii, and DSi. They have had in the past Gamecube, original XBOX, Playstation, DS, Gameboy, Leapster, Vsmile. Of all the years, and platforms, I would put this game in the top 10. I am amazed that even after having it for over a year, they both continue to come back to it, and enjoy hours of re-play. I am also impressed that it is so educational. They learn spelling, and new ways of thinking. I even have to use my brain sometimes to help them with spelling, or to think of a creative way of solving the problem.

5 out of 5 stars The cutest of the Skylander team!
Erica

This is the updated, series 2 version of Wrecking Ball, he's the CUTEST character of them all and very fun to play, especially for kids since he burps to take out his enemies and attacks them with his sticky long tongue! He's a magic element character and he works on both the original Skylanders Spyro's Adventures game & the new Skylanders Giants game which is great if you want to play him on the original! He can be used on all game systems: Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Wii, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360 systems! A great addition to any collection!Difference between this series 2 version and the original series 1 version of Wrecking Ball: He can level up to 15 now and has a WOW POW power that puts him into a fun rolling disco ball to roll over his enemies in, plus his teeth have grown much longer than before!

5 out of 5 stars Wrecking Ball awesome!

Buy Q*bert

Description

What's a Q*bert? He's a cantankerous little orange feller with an anteater-like snout and a penchant for swearing in an alien tongue. Don't worry, parents, his swearing is cutely expressed in asterisks and squiggles, accompanied by an audio clip of garbled electronic noises. Q*bert was the star of his very own coin-op video game that debuted back in 1982, challenging players to hop from cube to brightly colored cube while avoiding missteps and collisions, and this PlayStation remake contains that old game in its entirety. Also here is a brand new set of challenges spanning 24 lamp-lit levels. Q*bert doesn't make a very smooth transition from arcade to PlayStation, mostly because of its lack of decent control. In the original, coin-op version, players used a joystick that could move only on the diagonal to hop along cubes, changing their top color. In this version, the existence of the two sticks on the PlayStation analog or dual shock analog controllers is ignored. Instead, you must tilt your controller and use the D-pad to diagonally move Q*bert across the playing field. Still, the game has an inspired design, with cute characters, funny sound effects, and plenty of power-ups. But the control interface has a huge impact on gameplay, and in this case it's negative. --Jeff Young Pros: Includes the entire, original arcade game Groovy, psychedelic graphics Cons: Very hard to control Confusing menu designs

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!

Playing the new Qbert reminds me why some of the classics are so much better than todays games: gameplay. The graphics are great, but what makes this game is that it is easy to play, yet really challenging at times. The game is really 3 games in one: a new adventure game, a multiplayer game and the classic arcade game. The adventure game is faster than the original, with way better graphics and sounds. It also has a lot of variety in the levels. The classic game is exactly as I remember it, complete with your choice of the original or newer graphics, and head to head is a blast with 2 players trying to hop on all the cubes and screw up the other player at the same time!Control takes some getting used to, especially since Sony's controllers are terrible at diagonals, but you can play with the pad rotated (here's a tip: use the pad rotated right, and hold the controller with one hand). All in all, a great game.

3 out of 5 stars Oh for a 2600-style joystick
Robert S Michaels

The classic version would be great, if only I could substitute the shoddy PS controller for a real Joystick. As for the 3D adventure version, I find the perspective really wacky. It's sometimes really difficult to guess which way you're supposed to jump. Maybe I'm just less tolerant than I used to be.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT GAME!

Q*BERT shows why some of the orignal video games are still the best. Its the gameplay that sets them apart. Q*Bert wont dazzle you with graphics or music, but it will have you hooked with its great gameplay. The first night I fired this game up I couldn't quit playing it for 2 hours. It is easily addictive as Tetris, and that is a great thing. There is a little learning curve as the control can be a little tricky, however if you are using a Dual Shock controller, the analog pads are the way to go. I highly recommend picking this game up, it is a must own!

4 out of 5 stars When real arcades existed

Back in the "day" of the arcade, which was for me in the early 80's there was a little game called Q*bert stuck between Moonpatrol and Joust at my local arcade. Although, I was barely old enough to reach the controls and see the screen at the same time I can recall dumping quarters into the machine trying to change the color of the squares while evading the bad guys and failing miserably every time. While many other arcade classics have been remade in the past, as far as I know this is a first for Q*bert. This new version maintains the feel of the original game but, also includes many innovative updates. The controls on Playstation can be a bit quirky because of the angles but the basic setup can be changed and either analog stick can be used as well as the digital pad and the L/R buttons. In the adventure mode it can sometimes be a challenge to keep track of Q*bert on some of the more intricate boards but the good use of color in the game makes it manageable. The head-to-head game is a nice plus but I wish a random level generator would have been included to extend gameplay. Overall I would give Q*bert a B+ and think it will become one of my favorite puzzle games of all time along with Tetirs and Lode Runner.

5 out of 5 stars The Orange Guy is back!

After much anticipation I recieved this game, and it's the bestversion of Q*bert since his arcade release. The graphics are just amazing, the game play stays true to the original. If you buy one classic this year make it Q*bert for pc, or Playstation. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars The `80's rule

I think it's great the old arcade games are being brought back. My kids love it and its cheaper than pumping quarters, and better than the "kill or be killed" games.

4 out of 5 stars Guilty pleasure

When I first got this game, I thought it stunk! The graphics are not all that good in the first level of the game, the movement is hard to figure out, and it looked nothing like the old school Q*Bert that I use to play when I was a kid. But I kept at it, and the game really grew on me. After the first level, the game gets better and better. You have to jump in 3D all over Q*Bert land. If you like cheesy games that remind you of your childhood, then this game is kinda cool.

5 out of 5 stars He's Back!

My life hasn't really been complete since 1992, the year I got rid of the old Commodore 64, and lost access to Q-Bert. Having Q-Bert back is great. This offering brings back the classic edition, just like we all remember it. Loads of fun - You need to get this game today...
